Dr. No Is Fictional; Too Bad Coburn’s Not

Boy howdy. I suppose people in in OK are happy with the good doctor’s performance. If I know Okies, it’s actually more likely that they have no idea what goes on in DC and really don’t want to. They know Coburn is protecting them from the Red Menace and that’s good enough for them, critical thinking be damned. All that said, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to hear his newest threat against anybody who switches their HCR vote.

Now, getting mad about Sen. Coburn placing hold is kind of like getting mad at a dog for licking its balls: it’s just gonna happen. What strikes me as odd is the sort of nebulous threat level here: if a member switched their votes and if they lose re-election in November and if they get offered a job in the administration, then ol’  Hellfire Tom is gonna rain blood, people! The NYT makes this out to be raising the bar for obstruction, but frankly, it doesn’t really sound like much of a threat. Look at it this way: Coburn can be counted on to obstruct anything that might even remotely related to Democratic proposals. Why should you worry that he’s going to do what he’s going to do anyway?

Couple that with the fact that if Democrats can pull this off, two things will happen: 1) the world will not end and 2) people are going to be happy with some of the immediate changes. I think Dr. Tom will end up just looking silly(ier) blocking nominations just for the hell of it when even some of his dumb Okie constituents realize that they’ve been duped. Well, that would presume they’re capable of figuring it out, so let’s not hold our breath, mmmkay?

Tom, when the jokes aren’t fresh anymore and we’ve all heard the punchline, perhaps it’s time for a new gig? Maybe there’s a bathroom that needs sweeping or something.
