Faith Has Nothing To Do With It

I’ve been accused many times of being anti-religion. On the contrary, I think religion (or, more accurately, spirituality) can serve an important societal need. To that end, I fully support allowing people to subscribe to whatever dogma they choose, short of breaking the law. That also includes sheer ignorance. If your god tells you that the world was created in six days 6000 years ago and that all plants and animals appeared right then, fully formed, then I might consider you a gullible fool but I certainly won’t actively try to stop you from believing it. You’re entitled to your ignorant beliefs just as much as I am mine (crazy stuff like helping the poor and not killing people).

But when the Christianists start demanding that the entire country fall in line with their wackiness, then I start to get pissed. Again, I don’t care if you reject science and facts. Luckily, it will probably ensure that your impact on the world will be slight as you’re likely to die from an evolved bacteria or something. But there happens to be exactly one section of the Constitution that deals with religion, regardless what St. $arah Palin tells you:

US Constitution, Article VI, section 3

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States. (emphasis mine)

It’s really pretty clear cut.

All that being said, it pains me that a fair amount of people stubbornly refuse to acknowledge this fact. To continually insist that this is a Christian nation and that we divine (no pun intended) our code of civil content from the fucking King James version of the Bible is dangerous. These are the same folks who won’t accept that America is anything other than NUMBER 1!!!! Well, one way to ensure that that remains a fantasy in the minds of dimwits is to allow blind, uninformed faith to direct our society. We simply will not be able to keep up with the rest of the world in areas like science and math as long as certain factions continue to assert that they are fictional.

What’s really funny is that there is another group of religious zealots who reject the modern world in all its intricacies and demand complete fealty to a story written by humans hundreds of years ago. Perhaps you’ve heard of them?

The ongoing radicalization and brazen empowerment of fundamentalists in this country is dangerous; it undermines our ability to deal with the rest of the world not to mention compete equally in the fields mentioned above. It has nothing to do with faith. You can believe whatever you like. But when it threatens harm, physical, societal, or otherwise, keep it to your fucking self.
