The Republican Agenda: Screw Women, Children & Poor

Well, given the failed attempts today to wrangle their newfound majority, I’m not sure the agenda the Republicans is laying out has any chance of actually being enacted, even without Democratic opposition. But hilarious ineptitude aside, that agenda should be frightening to anyone who cares about the least among us. Kos’ Barbara Morrill lays out some of the greatest hits of the GOP’s newly released budget cuts:

  • $758 million from WIC (Women, Infants and Children):

WIC provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.

  • $1.3 billion from Community Health Centers:

To improve the health of the Nation’s underserved communities and vulnerable populations by assuring access to comprehensive, culturally competent, quality primary health care services. Individual health center grant mechanisms include: (1) Community Health Centers; (2) Migrant Health Centers; (3) Health Care for the Homeless; and (4) Public Housing Primary Care Program.

  • $210 million from Maternal and Child Health Block Grants:

The Maternal and Child Health Block Grant to States is a public health program that reaches across economic lines to improve the health of all mothers and children … train providers and support services for children with special healthcare needs, newborn screening and genetic services, lead poisoning and injury prevention, and health and safety promotion in child care settings.

And that’s in addition to the bill that would raise enormous taxes on businesses who supply health insurance that includes abortion coverage in a sly attempt to outlaw abortion entirely.

Now, let’s keep in mind that is the same group of people who practically burst blood vessels over tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans (which passed with Democratic support) and which will add nearly $800 billion to the deficit (the most important issue facing America, remember?). All these draconian cuts to the budget, affecting those citizens least prepared to deal with the consequences, are meant to address that same deficit. The GOP believes that these “sacrifices” are necessary to keep the country from imploding. Or exploding. Or something.

Well, how’d they do? I bet you can guess the answer. Yes, after slashing support for women, children and the poor, we’re left with a budget deficit that is approximately 1.5% smaller. But don’t worry. Pretty soon we’ll start hacking away at Social Security and Medicare so at least you won’t live long enough to see the entire nation come crashing down in flames.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say the GOP has absolutely no idea how to govern a country and no intention to learn.
