Koch and Walker, Sitting in a Tree

If there was ever any doubt who’s behind Scott Walker’s union-busting budget bill, look no further than his own telephone conversations. Of course, the Koch brother he thought he was talking to turned out to be fake, a hoax perpetrated by the awesome Buffalo Beast newspaper (the link is down at the time of writing. Coincidence?). But the sentiments and tactics Walker discusses are all too real:

Koch: We’ll back you any way we can. What we were thinking about the crowd was, uh, was planting some troublemakers.Walker: You know, well, the only problem with that —because we thought about that. The problem—the, my only gut reaction to that is right now the lawmakers I’ve talked to have just completely had it with them, the public is not really fond of this … My only fear would be if there’s a ruckus caused is that maybe the governor has to settle to solve all these problems … Let ‘em protest all they want…Sooner or later the media stops finding it interesting.

Yes, Walker thinks he’s talking to his corporate masters, so he lays it all out on the line. The takeaway is that this was never about budget matters. this is and always has been about corporations (namely the most powerful among them) trying once and for all to destroy one of the last vestiges of true democracy in the country. As Steve Benen notes, it’s tough to see how this helps Walker’s position.

The battle is just beginning, but it looks like the good guys are standing their ground while the wannabe autocrats and literal plutocrats continue to shoot themselves in the foot. They know that the country is wise to them and doesn’t approve, no matter how much Fox News lies about it.

Solidarity. We shall overcome.
